Understanding leadership competence for sustainability

Change initiatives for sustainable development suggest new leadership concepts that take the diversity of cross-sector stakeholders into account and create acceptable solutions for all. The notion of sustainability calls for a leadership paradigm that acknowledges the role of collective contributions to decision-making. The ability to lead collectively towards sustainability is an important premise for implementing profound and complex change initiative. It enables a group of committed leaders to share responsibility and collectively contribute to sustainable development, by respecting difference and diversity and cultivating the individual and collective identification with sustainability.

Such a collaborative approach calls for

  • conscious leadership in integrating differences in cultures, interests and goals,
  • awareness about the challenges of globalization,
  • the ability to successfully implement stakeholder engagement and cross-sector collaboration and
  • the design of consensus building processes in a result-oriented way.
